Ryan Blaney, a member of Cozen O’Connor’s Health Care practice group, will discuss strategies for managing internal investigations in the Clear Law Institute webinar, “Healthcare Internal Investigations: Best Practices, Legal Traps, and Collaborations Between In-House and Outside Counsel.” The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 requires all federal agencies to increase the civil monetary penalties effective August 1, 2016. The U.S. Department of Justice announced in a June 24, 2016 Interim Final Rule that it will nearly double the civil monetary penalties under the False Claims Act. With these higher fines, the importance of thorough internal investigations is more important to mitigate a company's risks of substantial government fines. The webinar will explain when to hire a consultant versus an attorney, the role a chief compliance officer plays in an internal investigation and the role of privilege in a health care compliance investigation. Ryan will also discuss the obligations and role of in-house counsel in an investigation and what happens following an internal investigation.
