Paula Zecchini, a member in the firm's Commercial Litigation Department, will be a panelist on the American Bar Association's webinar "To Be or Not to Airbnb: How Renters and Homeowners are affected by VRBO Platforms in the Modern Age." While home-sharing in exchange for compensation is not new, the practice has taken on a significant transformation in recent years. The internet enables homeowners and travelers to connect with online platforms like Airbnb, Vacation Rental by Owner (VRBO), and other vacation rental websites, allowing millions of people to rent out their rooms or houses for extra income. Yet, some HOAs and cities nationwide have not welcomed this economic opportunity; instead, imposing rules and policies that restrict vacation rental activity. Additionally, VRBO platforms have come under fire, and in some instances have been threatened with legal action, for allegations of bias and discrimination against prospective renters. During this one-hour program, you will learn from our roundtable panelists as they discuss an array of pertinent issues, including:

  • arbitration clauses and class action waivers;
  • diversity, discrimination, and the burden of proving bias;
  • VRBOs as “public accommodations”;
  • long-term rentals;
  • terms of service vs. “side-agreements”;
  • vacation rental industry impact on communities; and
  • HOA, zoning, and municipality impact on the vacation rental industry.
