Cozen O’Connor Attorneys Thomas M. Jones And Peter J. Mintzer Lecture For ABA Dispute Resolution Section Spring Conference

Cozen O’Connor members Thomas M. Jones and Peter J. Mintzer recently lectured at the American Bar Association (ABA) Dispute Resolution Section’s 10th Annual Spring Conference, “Pacific Currents: Sound Perspectives on ADR.” Jones’ presentation, entitled “Hobbling Through the Three-Legged World of Insurance Mediation: How to Get More Third-Party Liability Cases Settled,” dealt with cases involving third-party liability insurance, which often provide challenges for mediators, and provided valuable tips on how to solve the problems that may arise. Mintzer spoke on “What ADR Consumers Want from Mediators, Arbitrators and Neutrals,” discussing what alternative dispute resolution consumers looking for when they select a mediator or arbitrator, and how mediators can best position themselves to attract the best clients and referral sources.

A member in the Seattle office, Jones’ practice spans many areas of law, including professional and product liability, general and appellate litigation, insurance coverage and other matters, and technology and e-commerce. He is vice-chair of the national insurance department and heads the electronic discovery disputes practice area.

Jones is a member of the American, Washington State, Oklahoma and Seattle-King bar associations, the DRI, Washington Defense Trial Lawyers Association and ARMA International. He has acted as lead trial insurer counsel in some of the highest profile insurance coverage cases in the country. Jones was also selected by his peers as a Washington "Super Lawyer" from 2000 – 2007 and has authored several published articles.

A member in the Seattle office, Mintzer focuses his practice on complex insurance claims, particularly environmental and construction defect claims, as well as the defense of environmental, construction and bad faith claims. He also has an active ADR practice and frequently serves as an arbitrator and mediator in a wide array of civil matters, particularly including insurance, construction and environmental matters. Prior to joining the firm, Mintzer practiced with a Seattle law firm, where he focused on insurance coverage and bad faith litigation as well as defense of professional liability claims.

Admitted to practice in Washington and Oregon, Mintzer is a member of the American Bar Association Tort and Insurance Practice Section, as well as the Natural Resources and Environmental Law Section. He is also an active member of the Northwest Environmental Claims Association and authored the article, “Corporate Officer and Director Liability,” which was published in the Autumn 1997 issue of The Journal of Corporate Environmental Strategy.

Mintzer is a graduate of The College at the University of Chicago (B.A., 1985) and the University of Oregon (J.D., 1990). In 1989-90, he served as an intern at the Western Natural Resources Law Clinic affiliated with the University.
