In an article titled “The Power (And Peril) of Predictive Analytics,” David Walton, vice chair of Cozen O’Connor’s Labor & Employment Department, discusses the potential benefits and risks of predictive analytics as they relate to the hiring process. “The use of big data such as predictive analytics can be very powerful in terms of predicting what someone's going to do," says David. “It can also be used for questionable purposes,” he adds, citing a Belgian firm that uses big data to create credit profiles of potential bank customers. “The firm uses correlations which it says have revealed that people whose Facebook friends tend to write posts in all caps are potential credit risks, for example. If they can do that with credit monitoring, then what can they do with employment practices, and what are the potential implications? It's scary and amazing at the same time."
