It's critically important that you scrub all data from your computers before you hand them over to a recycler. If you don't, you could be on the hook for any data that gets exposed once those old machines leave your possession. And if those devices contain medical records, you could be on the hook for HIPPA and HITECH fines, too. "There are companies that will shred a disk or hard drives," says Dave. "There are also certain types of magnets that you can run across a hard drive that will completely wipe them. You can also physically destroy it with something as basic as a hammer."
