The senate’s Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization proposal is a plain-vanilla package of provisions that experts say maintains much of the status quo for funding the agency's programs, punting on hot-button issues like air traffic control reform to give aviation stakeholders an 18-month reprieve.
The senate’s Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2016, introduced Wednesday, lays out modest solutions for investing in airport infrastructure, upgrading security and integrating drones, while extending funding for the FAA and its programs until the end of September 2017. But it’s designed to be a more palatable proposal that counterbalances the House’s sweeping Aviation Innovation, Reform and Reauthorization Act, which lays out an ambitious plan to split off the nation’s air traffic control system, so as not to hamper negotiations on a compromise bill.
