Interview of Massachusetts AG Maura Healey by Cozen O'Connor Shareholder Lori Kalani

Tuesday, April 25, 2017

Lori Kalani, co-chair of Cozen O’Connor’s State Attorneys General practice, recently had the opportunity to speak to Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey about her efforts in concert with other AGs challenging the Trump Administration in several key policy areas, as well as her other priorities and issues of focus as an attorney general. They discussed topics such as the evolving roles of attorney generals, key issues they are facing in the Trump administration, and AG Healey’s views on the trend of attorney generals serving as a check on federal power.

State Attorneys General joining forces to challenge the Administration is not a new phenomenon. In coordinated actions, attorney generals brought lawsuits against President Obama’s policies and perceived overreaching authority on immigration, healthcare, labor, and the environment. In light of the shift in political power, the roles have reversed and now a number of attorney generals have resolved to step-up to challenge President Trump and the perceived void in regulation. There has been intense national media attention on those attorney generals as they carry through on their vow to be the first line of defense in pushing back on activities by the Trump Administration that they find unconstitutional.
