The maritime shipping industry is watching a bevy of new trade policy developments and environmental regulations intended to promote fair trade or curb emissions, but which may end up increasing the business challenges for importers, exporters, freight carriers and port operators. “Anything that impacts the global supply chain and puts it off will impact maritime, vessel or terminal operators and ultimately you can break that all the way down to trucks and rail,” Rob said. “If costs go up, consumers’ spending power go[es] down and fewer things move. So much of the maritime industry itself is globally competitive so if the sector doesn’t have the market that they need to grow and thrive, then the rest of the world is going to get ahead of them.”
