Cozen O’Connor Members Barry Boss, Bernard S. Grimm And Hayes A. Hunt Lecture on Trial Skills for D.C. Bar

Cozen O’Connor members Barry Boss, Bernard S. Grimm and Hayes A. Hunt recently lectured on trial skills for the District of Columbia Bar. Boss and Hunt’s lecture, part of the organization’s Essential Trial Skills Series, was entitled “Witness Preparation and Direct Examination,” and dealt with the vital task of preparing witnesses to testify credibly at trial. They also discussed different strategies for presenting a persuasive direct examination, as well as for minimizing the effectiveness of the anticipated cross examiner. Grimm’s presentation, entitled “Cross Examination,” involved teaching and demonstrating the particular technical skills utilized during cross examination.

Boss is the managing partner of Cozen O’Connor’s Washington, D.C., office. He concentrates his practice in complex criminal matters, focusing on white-collar crime and corporate compliance. Boss is co-author of Federal Criminal Practice, an 800-page treatise for criminal defense attorneys, and regularly serves as a faculty member or featured speaker at continuing legal education programs and seminars throughout the country.

Former co-chair of the U.S. Sentencing Commission’s Practitioners’ Advisory Group, Boss currently serves as co-chair of the American Bar Association criminal justice section sentencing committee and is a fellow of American Board of Criminal Lawyers. He has been named a “Top Lawyer” for criminal defense by Washingtonian magazine and is also a past recipient of the R. Kenneth Mundy Lawyer of the Year Award from the District of Columbia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

A resident of Chevy Chase, Md., Boss earned his undergraduate degree from Bates College (B.A., 1982) and his law degree from The George Washington University Law School (J.D., with high honors, 1985), where he was a member of Order of the Coif. Boss is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Maryland.

A member in the Washington, D.C., office, Grimm focuses his practice on white collar and complex criminal defense matters. He has extensive experience in federal and state courts, representing clients in civil and criminal matters and has also handled matters involving money laundering, bribery and visa fraud, as well as personal and premises liability.

A legal commentator for Fox News, Court TV and CNN, Grimm was recognized as one of the Top 100 Lawyers (#21) in the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area by Washingtonian Magazine in 2002. He also received the R. Kenneth Mundy Award, presented by the District of Columbia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers to the top trial lawyer in the jurisdiction.

Admitted to practice in Maryland and the District of Columbia, Grimm is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and served as president of the Public Defender Service Alumni Association from 1994-2002. In addition, he participated in the Harvard Law School Trial Advocacy Workshop and has been a guest lecturer for Widener University Law School and the District of Columbia Criminal Practice Institute. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Law Students in Court in Washington.

Grimm is a graduate of King’s College (B.A., summa cum laude, 1979) and Antioch School of Law (J.D., 1983).

A member in the Philadelphia office, Hunt practices in the firm's white collar and complex criminal defense practice, focuses on the representation of individuals and corporations charged with violations of various federal and state criminal law. Hunt has a diverse legal background in criminal law, civil litigation and teaching. He has tried numerous cases to verdict in both criminal and civil matters.

A member of the firm’s Professional Training and CLE Committee, Hunt has been actively involved in the development of trial advocacy training programs and has created and presented numerous vignette advocacy programs dealing with trial and deposition skills. He was the Program Director for the 2007 Inaugural Cozen O’Connor Trial Academy. Hunt frequently serves as a faculty member for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.

Hunt is a graduate of Temple University Beasley School of Law (J.D., 1997). He is admitted to practice in New York and Pennsylvania.
