Bernie Sanders Bows Out and Next Steps for the Democratic Ticket

Tuesday, July 12, 2016

Mark Alderman, chairman of Cozen O’Connor Public Strategies, discusses the ramifications of Bernie Sanders' endorsement, the ensuing opportunities, and the dynamic of the Democratic convention on Sirius XM's POTUS Politics. Speaking to Tim Farley on The Morning Edition, Mark calls the end of Bernie's candidacy as a "fait accompli" but says that this provides him with the opportunity to accomplish his "first and foremost" goal of "deny[ing] Donald Trump the White House ... he will now be out there with the president, the first lady, the vice president, Senator Warren and others. This puts Bernie back in the family in the fight against Trump." Mark also expressed that this was a "legacy choice he had to make" and that by supporting Hillary Clinton's efforts to defeat Trump he can serve as "the leading voice for the post-Obama policy platform of the Democratic party." When prompted about how the presumptive candidate can best use Sanders as a surrogate, Mark said his influence would be very useful with the younger voters. Stating that the primary challenge with this demographic is not convincing them that she is the right choice, but prompting them to actually make the effort to vote, Mark advises Hilary Clinton's campaign to "send him out to college campuses, especially in swing states, and get them out to the polls."
