College Sports Face New Integrity Worries with Legal Betting

Stephen Miller, vice chair of Cozen O’Connor’s White Collar Defense & Investigations Practice, is quoted Law 360 on the impact legalized sports betting has on the integrity of college sports. The issue is of growing concern for college sports, as amateur college athletes, who are not compensated beyond their scholarships to attend school, may be more susceptible or vulnerable to corruption.

“I think it is something that the individual colleges are going to have to get their hands around as part of their compliance departments,” Stephen said. “They already have massive compliance departments devoted to compliance with NCAA rules. Sports betting just opens up another front where the compliance departments are going to have to be watching out for any signs of corruption.”
