Cozen O’Connor Attorney Gary Gassman Elected Vice-Chair of ABA Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section

Thursday, August 15, 2019

CHICAGO, August 15, 2019 -- Chicago attorney Gary Gassman, co-chair of Cozen O’Connor’s Professional Liability Coverage Practice, has been elected vice-chair of the American Bar Association Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS), one of the ABA’s largest sections.

He is now on the path to become TIPS chair in two years: during 2020-21 he will serve as chair-elect and will rise to chair for the 2021-22 bar year.

Gassman was most recently the diversity officer of TIPS for the past two years, where he also served as co-chair of the TIPS special standing committee on diversity and inclusion. Before that, he served on  TIPS Council (the Section’s governing body) and was chair of several general committees.

“I am privileged to join an elite group of people who have had the honor of serving as TIPS chair,” said Gassman. “I will be the first graduate of the TIPS Leadership Academy and the first openly gay male to serve as chair of this section when I am installed in 2021.”

A long-time member of TIPS, Gassman has served in various leadership positions including terms as chair of the Corporate Counsel Committee, Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee, International Committee, the Task Force on Corporate Governance Institute, and the Task Force on Corporate Counsel Outreach. He is also a 2009 graduate of the TIPS Leadership Academy.

Gassman, who works out of Cozen O’Connor’s Chicago office, focuses his practice in the areas of insurance coverage counseling and litigation. He also leads the Cozen O’Connor LGBTQ attorney resource group. For more than 25 years, he has handled cases involving directors’ and officers’ liability, employment practices liability, fiduciary liability, other types of professional liability and general liability. He serves as national coverage counsel for several domestic and international insurance clients.

Earlier this year, Gassman was recognized as one of the 2019 “Notable Gen X Leaders in Law” by Crain’s Chicago Business for his success and accomplishments in leadership roles within the firm and across the legal community.

Gassman is licensed to practice in Illinois, Wisconsin and Arizona. He received a B.A. from Indiana University in 1990 and a J.D. from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago in 1993.
