Ken Fisher discusses think tanks for decision makers in government policy in amNY. Ideas often originate from organizations dedicated solely to the advancement of policy, at times aligned with the interests of their sponsors or from a perspective that originally led to the creation of the organization, which are known as think tanks. The Citizens Union is one of the oldest examples in New York City, founded in 1897, and recently merged with the 5Boro Institute, the latter of which was formed in 2022 to provide intellectual support to Mayor Eric Adams.
While both have individually faced challenges over the years, the merger provides an opportunity to draw on the other’s strengths. It will combine the innovative policy approaches of the 5Boro Institute with the seasoned experience the Citizens Union provides, together signaling that the organization is poised to speak up on critical issues and ensure they are heard.
