Cottonwood Fire
Currently burning, the Cottonwood Fire is the largest active wildfire in the U.S. The Cottonwood Fire has already damaged numerous structures at and around the Eagle Point ski resort, threatening many more. Utah Governor Spencer Cox has opined that this wildfire may be the “most destructive” on record, in terms of property loss.
This wildfire event originated on June 22, 2026, in Beaver County, Utah. As of June 30, the fire has burned approximately 93,819 acres in Fishlake National Forest. The fire is ongoing and is currently 4% contained. Weather reports indicate the potential for continued extreme fire behavior and rapid fire growth.
Primary Affected Zip Codes: 84713, 84740, 84750, 84723
Additional zip codes with potential impact: 84731, 84751, 84701

In addition to firefighting efforts, local fire authorities have the origin and cause under investigation. While it was initially reported as “human caused,” the fire may be related to a tree in a power line operated by Rocky Mountain Power. Cozen O’Connor is currently investigating the Cottonwood Fire for potential recovery efforts. We have an early witness video and have dispatched our team of wildfire experts.
The investigation into the origin and cause of the fire is underway, yet developing slowly considering a no fly zone and closed access. However, we continue to gather information on the ground.
Note, as insured losses begin to emerge, early evaluation of subrogation viability is critical. From a recovery standpoint, wildfire claims in this region often turn on issues such as utility involvement, land management practices, controlled burn activity, and compliance with applicable burn bans or safety regulations. Where fires originate near power infrastructure, rights-of-way, agricultural operations, or construction activity, meaningful third-party recovery opportunities may exist. Conversely, widespread acts of nature defenses and causation challenges can narrow viable targets if not addressed early.
As the investigation develops, we will evaluate the viability of subrogation recovery.
