Before that, he was a partner at a New York-based firm focusing on litigation and corporate law, where he represented major corporations in cases involving commercial disputes, construction defects, toxic torts, and product liability. He began his legal career with an Atlanta-based firm focusing on national defense litigation.

Tom earned his bachelor's degree from Georgia State University and his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Georgia School of Law.
