Michael brings 35 years of litigation experience to the Subrogation & Recovery Department in the firm's Toronto office. Michael's experience ranges from insurance and risk management to constitutional issues and treaty-based aboriginal land claims. Michael has been sought out as a speaker for seminars on civil litigation and procedure, construction and insurance litigation, and trial advocacy at various organizations, including the Canadian Bar Association and the Society of Insurance Fellows.
Melissa represents insurers in complex litigation throughout the country, in cases involving general liability, professional liability, excess/umbrella liability, and complex litigation throughout the U.S. She is a member of the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel and regularly presents on various topics including excess and umbrella insurance, negotiation strategies, the role of coverage counsel, issues impacting multi-national claims handling, construction defect coverage, and more.
J.C. is an international insurance lawyer who has worked with leading Lloyd's and Company Market claims and underwriting personnel. He has been designated panel counsel by a number of London-based insurers and regularly acts in high-profile coverage, defense, subrogation, and monitoring roles in North America. In addition to his U.S. bar admissions, he is also an English solicitor admitted to practice in England and Wales.
Elliott is co-chair of the Subrogation & Recovery Department at Cozen O’Connor, where he has worked since 1982. He has litigated and tried numerous complex cases for the firm's insurance and commercial clients and is a member of the firm's board of directors and Management Committee.
Paul concentrates his civil litigation practice on first-party property insurance coverage and has extensive experience advising clients on complex property damage claims arising from natural disasters, equipment failures, fires, and more. He has developed strong relationships in the London Market and has represented carriers and syndicates in various claims. Additionally, Paul conducts seminars and workshops to update London insurers on recent trends and issues in U.S. law that may affect them.
Shane is the chair of the firm’s Canadian IP practice group. He is a highly experienced strategic business adviser specializing in trademark and IP assets and has assisted renowned brands worldwide in their acquisition and licensing plans. As a registered trademark agent, Shane manages IP portfolios, guides clients on trademark-related matters, and represents them in litigation. His experience extends to navigating international regulatory regimes, making him a valuable asset to clients in the technology, manufacturing, retail, and entertainment sectors. Additionally, he collaborates with clients to address enforcement actions by global securities regulators and law enforcement agencies in the digital economy.
Kevin is co-chair of Cozen O'Connor's Subrogation & Recovery Department, as well as the chair of the department's Atlantic and Northeast regional offices. He joined the firm in 1987 and has successfully litigated and tried cases throughout the U.S. in both state and federal court, concentrating on complex property damage claims arising from fires, explosions, mechanical failures, and structural collapses. Kevin is a member of Cozen O'Connor's Board of Directors and serves on the firm's management committee, as well as several legal and professional associations.
Robert advises both U.S. and foreign companies on various domestic and international antitrust, foreign investment, national security, and trade regulation issues. He represents clients before federal agencies in Washington, D.C., foreign governments, and international organizations in antitrust matters, including compliance, pre-merger clearance, and government investigations. Robert also has experience in international trade and government contracts, where he advises clients on CFIUS reviews, FOCI mitigation, and FAR compliance and represents clients in bid protests and M&A transactions.
Howard concentrates his practice on wildfires, catastrophic property damage claims, energy/utility losses, product liability, construction defect, fine art & specie, and commercial litigation. He has successfully handled significant subrogation and recovery cases against public and private utilities, major manufacturers, national contractors, and government entities in mass tort events. Howard is the Managing Partner of the Los Angeles office of Cozen O'Connor, and he has been recognized for his work as co-lead litigation counsel for the subrogation industry in major California wildfires, including the 2018 Woolsey Fire.
Jodi is a litigator representing insurers in complex insurance coverage disputes and maritime matters. She has extensive experience defending bad faith claims and has successfully litigated hundreds of cases, including two of the largest coverage cases in Washington state history. Jodi also has an active mediation practice and serves as an arbitrator.
Stephen is a litigator who focuses on property insurance, D&O insurance, business interruption issues, and other extracontractual litigation matters. He has tried over 45 first-party extracontractual cases to verdict in a career spanning more than 30 years. Stephen is also a Fellow of the American College of Coverage Counsel and serves on the Board of Regents.
Brigeeta is vice chair of the firm’s White Collar Defense & Investigations practice group. She specializes in representing trademarks and IP owners, advising on securities regulatory proceedings, IP enforcement, and fraud-related litigation. With a background as a prosecutor and investigator, Brigeeta brings extensive experience in national and international investigations and enforcement, including cases involving online piracy, counterfeit goods, and crisis management. As a certified fraud examiner, she handles cross-border internal investigations and provides strategic advice on workplace compliance and cyber breach prevention, benefiting clients in the technology, manufacturing, retail, and entertainment industries.
James is a litigator concentrating on property, marine, and aviation subrogation claims, with experience in successfully litigating cases worldwide. He currently serves as the chair of national hiring, overseeing and continuing the firm’s growth and expansion in key markets nationally and internationally. He is responsible for all partner acquisitions across the firm's global geographic footprint and the firm’s Lateral Integration Program. He is also co-chair of the firm’s International Practice.
Joseph's practice concentrates on insurance coverage and bad faith litigation involving a wide array of first- and third-party claims, including professional liability, pollution, food contamination, pharmaceutical products, construction defect, advertising injury, and medical devices. He has acted as lead counsel in many high-profile insurance coverage suits across the U.S. and counsels clients on evaluating and reducing risk on complex liability and coverage issues. He also serves on the firm’s Board of Directors, Management Committee, and Shareholders Compensation Committee.
