Personal time is often driven by company culture, and the use of paid time off instead of sick days can encourage employees to feel more comfortable taking days away, says David. “In some companies, taking time off is viewed as a necessary part of healthy living, and actively encouraged,” he says. “In other cultures, absent employees are a real hardship, and time off is frowned upon unless absolutely necessary,” he says. “The key is to find a happy medium where employees are allowed to use time off without interfering with the operational needs of the company,” he advises.
