Oil Firm, Rival Denied Early Wins In Trade Secret Dispute

David Barron, Jennifer Williams, Adam Gutmann, and Nandini Kavuri's argument in Core Laboratories LP et al. v. AmSpec LLC et al. was discussed in a Law360 article covering the case. An Alabama federal judge on Wednesday denied both parties a quick win in Core Laboratories Inc.'s trade secret suit against AmSpec LLC, ruling there were questions surrounding AmSpec's counterclaims that a former worker joined Core Laboratories and attempted to lure away employees of the rival oil field service firm in violation of an employment agreement. Senior U.S. District Judge Callie V.S. Granade found that it was not yet clear whether Christopher Bartlett, who left AmSpec to work at Core Laboratories affiliate Saybolt LP, was — as AmSpec alleged — recruiting a former co-worker in violation of his employment contract when he told Russell Bujol about opportunities at his new company. Saybolt and AmSpec both provide inspecting, testing and monitoring services within the oil and gas industry.
